Just some of all that’s going on:

-Jordan and Ewing spotted in Biltmore Park: Former NBA basketball superstarts Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing, old college basketball rivals, were spotted eating together Wednesday night at 131 Main restaurant in Biltmore Park. Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, is in town because his team is holding training camp in Asheville. They will play the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 8 at the US Cellular Center. The team is staying at the Hilton in Biltmore Park.

Whist now open: The new gift shop on Haywood Road in West Asheville celebrates its grand opening with a party on Friday. Here’s the press release info:

WHIST is an independent gift shop located at 428A Haywood Road in West Asheville. The shop is stocked with a full selection of fun & festive greeting cards from many small companies around the country. Wood and Spoon now open: The new store at 227 Haywood Road ( in East-West Asheville next to Short Street Cakes) specializes in vintage and antique home goods and furniture. It will also serve as an art gallery. Check ’em out. Carrie-Welles Craven,

-New bike shop on Haywood: There’s a new bike shop coming to Haywood Road, as well. It’s moving into the building at 444 Haywood Road, just east of Second Gear and the Crossfit Asheville gym. Still don’t have a name or details yet. More to come.

-James Beard dinner: Chef Adam Hayes of the Red Stag Grill at The Bohemian hotel in Biltmore Village is serving up the same dinner tonight that he served at the James Beard House last month. The menu will be featured at the restaurant soon. I’m going tonight and will report back.

-More pizza: All Souls Pizza, the awesome new pizza joint on Clingman Avenue, will be open for lunch for the first time on Friday. Delicious food and wood-fired pizza. Check this place out if you haven’t already.

-Wicked Biz Pitch: Sean McNeal, owner of Asheville Growler, the new beer growler filling station on Merrimon Avenue, won the first ever Wicked Biz Pitch on Tuesday at Wicked Weed Brewing. In “Shark Tank” style, seven entrepreneurs pitched their biz ideas to a group of local judges. They awarded $1,000 to McNeal for his idea, a growler filling station that will be manufactured in Asheville and will be better than anything currently on the market. Word is he already has an angel investor interested. The second-place winner of $750 was Brendan Fitzgerald, who pitched his idea called the Daily Comedy App.

-Urban Trail sculptures return: The city of Asheville is replacing the popular Urban Trail sculptures of musicians and listeners outside the US Cellular Center in downtown Asheville. The city says that Urban Trail stop is the city’s most popular. Work is happening today and tomorrow.

-Magnolia’s and Off the Wagon: Magnolia’s restaurant in downtown Asheville has closed. Meantime, a spokeswoman for Off the Wagon, the new piano bar going in at former Cinjades next door to Magnolia’s, says new bar will be open end of month/first of November.

-Bele Chere replacement: The city of Asheville has officially released its call for proposals for a new signature city festival, one that would replace Bele Chere, which the city is no longer funding. To see or respond to the Request for Information, go to http://ow.ly/pqtAs.

-Hey Day is back: Press release here:

The 37th annual Hey Day fall festival returns to the Western North Carolina Nature Center on Saturday October 12, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The Nature Center will be bustling with excitement with more than 30 interactive stations and entertainers to join the fun.  “Hey Day is our largest single attendance day”, notes Keith Mastin, Curator of Education at the Nature Center, “last year, we welcomed almost 2,500 guests and with nice weather we should be right around that number again this year”

The new Highlife Gallery on Patton near intersection with Leicester calls itself “the largest smoke shop on the East Coast.”
