Ashvegas reader: What’s up with all the cops around Beaver Lake?

This comes up just about every year. First, the note from loyal reader Sean:

Was in North Asheville near Beaver Lake about an hour ago.  Heading south, I saw six state trooper cars parked along the Northbound lane of Merrimon near the lake, was passed by two more about a mile or so from that, saw an obvious unmarked trooper car parked close to Greenlife, and saw Buncome Country sherrif’s cars at the entrance to the Expressway as I headed back to West Asheville.

So what’s going on? I think it’s mandated police training on how to use speed-measuring radar guns. It’s an annual training, held around Beaver Lake. I’ve just never figured out why they use that area to do the training.

They are there because it’s the rich white neighborhood of Reynolds mountain. What, you think they’d send all the cars to the ghetto? No.

Yeah I was there in April with my wife and son and there must have been 6 squad cars. We were wondering what was up thanks for the explanation.

Maybe there were reports of a donut sale.

Bodies and heightened police presence do not mean "conspiracy" and of course I never made such an argument. Don't put words into my mouth.

Public announcements on both issues would have been considerate.

And of course I have asked various media and law enforcement people I know about the police presence around Beaver Lake. Nobody ever knew anything solid. Everybody assumed it was some sort of meeting or in-service training at the Country Club, since it happens fairly often and many of the squad cars along Merrimon often appear to be empty.

Lucky you, Barnaby, for asking the right person the very first time. You get to be King of the Thread. Your mother must be very proud.

Sean – I agree. It's not like they're even pulling over cars and are causing no traffic issues.

James – First of, 11 years and you never heard anything? I used to work around Beaver Lake and the first time they had the training, I asked someone what was going on and they told me exactly what it was.

But what I really like is how you mentioned the "two dead bodies have been discovered at the clocking location"… It's as if you're implying the training had something to do with it. Conspiracy……. Oooooo…..

Oh North Asheville, you sure make me laugh.

James…..two things. One: If you have been so concerned for 11 years, why did you never call the police department and ask? Two: The deaths were suicides. The local media has what is pretty much a blanket policy on not reporting suicides. Again, if you are concerned, all you have to do is ask.

My comment about "openness and tolerance" was geared toward the type of squeaky wheel citizens Asheville has….especially here in the last two years. You have Kelly making the comment that she wishes that they would leave that area. The officers are there conducting training to make themselves better, are not hurting anyone, and provide the added benefit of creating the safest jogging/cycling/walking area in Asheville during the time they are there. My comment was a stab to Kelly; I've pretty much had it with all of the do-gooder BS I read in Asheville, and then to hear comments like hers.

Sean…I live in that area too and also find it quite alarming to have my neighborhood swarming with squad cars and no idea why they are there.

I have lived here for 11 years and this comment thread is the very first clear explanation I ever have seen for the significant periodic law enforcement presence at that location.

I note in passing that not one but two dead bodies have been discovered at the clocking location — north end of Beaver Lake — in recent years. To my knowledge, neither ever have been explained publicly.

Has nothing at all to do with "openness and tolerance" as you say.

Wow Kelly. Thanks for all of that "openness and tolerance" that I have come to expect from Asheville citizens. How exactly are they hurting you, again?

It's some type of police training. Not sure why they always seem to do it in Beaver Lake area. We live nearby and really wish they would have other locations for this activity.

That's where officers do clocks for mandatory radar certifications and re-certifications. It's a good centralized area for regional law enforcement to gather and to train, and it's a relatively safe road for officers to sit beside while they do it. Training goes on several times a year, not just once a year. It would not be plausible to do it in a place like Patton Avenue or Tunnel Road. We have used this area for years with no problems. People sometimes think it's some kind of conspiracy or big operation. It's basically just school. No big deal.

It's more than annual. Squad cars from many jurisdictions line that stretch of Merrimon around Beaver Lake approximately once every month, give or take. Very ominous looking, but I never see actual traffic stops or other enforcement going on.

    Curious.
