Chief of Greenville Police Department resigns to take job as Asheville’s new police chief

NewsChannel 12 has just learned Greenville’s police chief is resigning.
Chief William Anderson will be leaving the Greenville Police Department to become the Police Chief of the City of Asheville, NC.
“Chief Anderson has been an innovative and dedicated leader of the Greenville Police Department,” said City Manager Wayne Bowers. “He has built a strong community-oriented policing foundation for the Department, initiating the Police Athletic League program and implementing the district policing concept. He will be missed in Greenville. I congratulate him on his new position.”
Chief Anderson became Chief of Police in Greenville on June 5, 2006.
His last day working for Greenville will be February 17, 2012.

Chief William J. Anderson was appointed Chief of Police on June 5, 2006. Chief Anderson is a native of Daytona Beach, Florida. He retired on August 21, 1999 from the Daytona Police Department as a Police Commander after 20 years of service and has served as the Chief of Police for the City of Elizabeth City, North Carolina for two and a half years and DeLand, Florida for three and a half years.

Chief Anderson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida and an Associate of Science Degree in Law Enforcement from the Daytona Beach Community College now known as Daytona State College. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 192nd Session, Quantico, Virginia.

    The first African-American Police Chief in Asheville history, I believe. Certainly will help to increase the diversification of the local police department, esp., in leadership roles. This is a momentous day in Asheville history. I congratulate the new chief and thank the city manager for this hire.
