YMI Historical Series Part 2: Life Beneath the Veneer  “The Beginning” will feature the theme of slavery in WNC 

Saturday April 23, 5pm – 7pm, YMI Cultural Center, Ray Auditorium

Darin Waters will continue to share his historical research and insights into the pre-emancipation experiences of African Americans in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. Through examining records of the time, Darin is unearthing a different picture of African American life in Western North Carolina than what has come to be accepted as fact. 

This event will feature two musicians from the Asheville area:  Kimberly Cann is a concert pianist who has performed and taught internationally; Bryant Belin is a Bass-Baritone soloist and the owner of VP Music Studios.  Concert arrangements of spirituals by African-American composers comprise their program, including “Troubled Water,” an arrangement of “Wade in the Water” by Margaret Allison-Bonds, and “Deep River” by Moses Hogan.

Also enjoy an interview of a local historical figure.
