Call to Artists:

The Cutting Edge: The Language of Textiles & Fiber Art

Exhibition Dates: April 4-May 5, 2012

Applications Due: March 3, 2012

In this fast paced world, the technology of spoken and written human communication and the tools it requires are ever changing. The language of textile and fiber artists was forged through centuries of tradition, but speaks with a contemporary voice. In these artists’ skilled hands, ancient and modern tools – scissors, looms, needles, hooks, shuttles, spinning wheels, thimbles, dyepots, even computers – are employed to tell their stories through the creation and decoration of textiles and fiber art.

Design and selection of fabrics are gestures, while the tools are as significant to the language of textiles as the pencil is to writing. Desert Moon Designs Studios & Gallery in Asheville’s River Arts District focuses this exhibit on the diverse communication in textile and fiber art. What do contemporary textiles and fiber art say about the artisan? As an artisan working in this medium, you must express feelings through color, texture and materials. For this exhibit, the use of non-traditional materials and techniques to express the artist’s voice are encouraged. The gallery asks artists to use the medium of textiles/fiber art to communicate anything they want, keeping in mind the contemporary, cutting edge theme.

The gallery celebrates diversity in thought, word, action and art from the emerging to the seasoned artist. Minority artists are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility:
Artists must be 18 years of age or older and reside in Western North Carolina. All works submitted must be created in the last two years.

Further details, dates and guidelines are explained in the application at www.desertmoondesigns-studios.com/thecuttingedge.
