Postell was a Murphy town cop just making his rounds when he came across a Dumpster-diving Eric Robert Rudolph.

My former colleague Mike Benzie has this great remembrance of covering the capture of Eric Robert Rudolph, the notorious fugitive convicted of the Olympic bombing in Atlanta. Benzie writes about how Jeff Postell, a Murphy town cop, was just making his rounds early on the morning of May 31 when he came upon Rudolph Dumpster-diving:

Postell was working the overnight shift from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and by 3 a.m., he was the only officer on duty for his 10-officer department. Most of the evening was typical, he said. Locals cruising, a few traffic stops, answering calls.
“It was no different than any other night,” he said. “I never had a system, because I was trained that criminals will do research. They map out how people do things, if they have some type of a system.”
Postell said he tried to alter his patterns.
Sometime around 3 a.m., Postell said he brought his police cruiser around the back of a Save-A-Lot grocery store in Murphy.
“I saw somebody in the alleyway, and they recognized my presence and they ran. I saw what appeared to be something like a long gun,” he said. (The gun, in fact, was a long Maglite flashlight that Rudolph had tied to himself, said Postell.)
“I remember getting on the radio and calling off very quickly, ‘Man with a gun.’”

Benzie tracked down Postell and caught up on his life. Postell is now a campus cop at Boston College:

It’s, of course, a coincidence that Postell was in Boston during the recent marathon bombings, which drew comparisons to the Rudolph case.
He was off the day of the race and said neither he nor his agency had anything to do with the investigation, outside of keeping the campus of Boston College safe.
“I cannot sit here and tell you that the image of the marathon finish line did not take me back to the image of Olympic Park,” he said. “Because you have so many people brought together for common purposes. This has been one of the first bombings since then. It was kind of a flashback.”

Rudolph is writing his autobiography.

Here’s more of Rudolph’s story, Lone Wolf, as told by an award-winning writer.

Blue Kudzu Sake makes the announcement on FB:

We have the keys! Blue Kudzu Sake Co, coming to 372 Depot St, Asheville! Unit 50!

Last year, Blue Kudzu launched a couple of unsuccessful Kickstarter campaigns, but that hasn’t stopped the crew – Mitch Ford, Cat Ford-Coates and Mary Taylor - from moving ahead with their plans to open a sake brewery in town.

More background about the effort from their Kickstarter:

Over the past year through all of our small craft batches and during all of our research and experimentation, we learned that 3 mirco-sake breweries have opened in the United States and are creating small batch craft sake, with very warm reception. We wish to add our name to the small, but growing, craft sake scene in the United States. In an effort to try to start our brewery we enrolled in a local business incubator class at Mountain Biz Works, and developed a working business plan. With their encouragement, we have done extensive market research, as well held customer test sessions. We discovered that our business model is sound and plausible. Eureka! We have a realistic and profitable business plan! Mountain Biz works showed us that we could feasibly start our own kura (sake brewery). To ensure our success we will continue to work with Mountain Bizworks through their mentoring and coaching programs as we expand from home brewing into commercial brewing of American craft sake.

I just wanted your readers to be aware that due to the influx of sunshine (finally!) this Saturday, The Little Flea will be spreading its little wings as usual from 3 – 7pm at 718 Haywood Road (across from The Hop). We’ve got a different assortment of vendors selling everything from plant starts, vintage furniture and accessories, jewelry, candles, homemade housewares and goods and plenty of that wonderful mish-mash that makes for a great flea market. And, because Flea Fans will get hungry and thirsty, Pho Ya’ Belly and Ursa Minor Coffee will be there to replenish and rehydrate.

Thanx much!

The city of Asheville has declared Thursday officially Bob Moog Day. From moogmusic.com:

Moog Music is pleased to announce that Mayor Terry Bellamy has issued an official proclamation declaring May 23rd to be Bob Moog Day in the city of Asheville. The proclamation highlights many of Dr. Moog’s achievements, including the significant economic impact the company he founded has had on the greater Asheville area. Bob Moog, the founder of Moog Music and inventor of the legendary Moog synthesizer, made Asheville the home of his family and his company in 1978 and lived and worked here until his death in 2005. May 23rd would have been Dr. Moog’s 79th birthday.

To celebrate this historic occasion, Moog Music is donating over $25,000 in instruments to Asheville City Schools. Said Mike Adams, Moog Music President, “As a product of the Asheville City School System, I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to give back to our schools, young people and the community. I hope that the Moog instruments we donate will inspire kids toward creative expression through the exploration of music. Who knows, maybe one of them is the next Bob Moog or Stevie Wonder!”

Moog employees will also be conducting clinics and instrument demonstrations at each Asheville City School over the next few months. Moog Music staff, some of whom attended Asheville City Schools, are grateful to be continuing Dr. Moog’s work and to be a small part of his enduring legacy. Thanks to Dr. Moog, Moog Music is driven by a company culture that lives at the intersection of technology and music. This culture will also be celebrated at Moogfest, April 25-27, 2014. Moogfest is the company’s multi-day festival in honor of the innovative spirit of Bob Moog, who was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame earlier this month.

From my colleague Karen Chavez at her blog, Girls Gone Outdoors:

Here’s something pretty super awesome cool – a screening of “Spirit of the Marathon II: Rome Marathon,” is coming out June 12 and will be shown at the Carolina theater in Asheville!

If you’ve never seen the original “Spirit of the Marathon” stop what you’re doing now and go rent it. Released in 2008, it’s a documentary that follows several people as they prepare for the Chicago Marathon, from first-time marathoners to Olympians.

I watched it before I ran my first marathon in 2010 and it was really special, and inspiring. …

The movie will be screened at 7 p.m. June 12 at the Carolina Cinemas, 1640 Hendersonville Road in Asheville. And, maybe best of all, some of the movie’s proceeds will benefit the One Fund, to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15.

More about the movie, by director Jon Dunham:

From the producers of the award-winning documentary Spirit of the Marathon (2008), this highly-anticipated sequel follows seven runners from around the world as they journey to the starting line of the 2012 Rome Marathon. Spirit of the Marathon II weaves the compelling stories of each runner – the trials and the triumphs – that paved their road to Rome. The documentary also features insightful interviews with marathon greats such as Stefano Baldini, Paula Radcliffe, Frank Shorter, and many others, as they offer perspective and insight into this legendary race. In addition, immediately following the presentation, movie theater audiences will be treated to an exclusive featurette with never-before-seen interviews, deleted scenes and memorable outtakes from the filming of the documentary.

The breweries just keep opening in a whirlwind here. Just got word about Lookout Brewing, located in a home brewery supply store at 103 S. Ridgeway in Black Mountain. That would push the Buncombe County breweries to 14.

And news of another regional brewery: Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone, just a mile from the ASU campus, is the newest member of the Asheville Brewers Alliance and will be at the Beer City Festival. Welcome to the party, all!

we have been approved for our expansion loan.
The Bar under Rosettas Kitchen should be open this fall
this also means extra seating for those busy busy hours….
what are we gonna call it?
should it have it’s own name?
ekkkkkkk! yayayayayayay!!!

Rosetta’s restaurant, Rosetta’s Kitchen, has a facade on Lexington Avenue as well as on Broadway. The restaurant is expanding into an old car repair shop below its restaurant on the Lex Ave side. The space will be a full bar, and will give restaurant much more room to work. Congratulations!
