I missed posting about this event before it happened over the weekend, but I love the effort going into keeping our city looking good. And there’s lots of good information here. So check it:

Asheville GreenWorks Combats Graffiti Vandalism

Reports of graffiti in Asheville are on the rise. On September 19th, Asheville GreenWorks, formerly Quality Forward, is sponsoring a Graffiti Removal Day to enable concerned citizens to do their part to combat this problem.

“We’re sponsoring this cleanup because graffiti hurts our city.  Business and property owners can’t always afford to deal with the problem – especially if they are vandalized repeatedly,” said Asheville GreenWorks coordinator Allison McGehee.  “The best way to combat graffiti is to cover it within 48 hours and keep it covered.  That way the vandals don’t get the satisfaction of seeing their ‘tag’ long enough to make it worth the trouble.”

Volunteers will meet at 9am at Vincenzo’s Restaurant at 10 N. Market Street. Teams will fan out to clean sites in downtown, north, west, and south Asheville to work until 1pm. A volunteer coordinator will train volunteers. All supplies, including gloves, are provided. To sign up, call 254-1776 or email [email protected].

For those who can’t volunteer on September 19th but wish to help our city with this problem, a loaner graffiti removal kit is available free of charge from Asheville GreenWorks by calling 254-1776 or emailing [email protected]. The kit can be used on unpainted surfaces. The product in the kit will remove moderate amounts of graffiti.

And, keep this number handy: 255-5050. Call this number to report graffiti. You can also email [email protected] with any leads. Asheville GreenWorks is the co-sponsor of a reward program for these tips.

Asheville GreenWorks is the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and has been working to keep Buncombe County clean and green through volunteer projects since 1974.

You know with so much great street art in this city – places down by the river, chicken ally, buxton st, etc; I hate to see that good artistic vibe being ruined by a few useless taggers with only enough creativity to drop their name on a barren wall.

The worst of them is the tagger "TRIDE" This person drops their tag everywhere, Wow, we get it you can spell. Not only that, its a bad tag and meaningless. If you gonna riddle this city with your call, at least take some time and make it something worth looking at, not this single color, single line, first grade writing you force us to look at everywhere. If you are out there, if you see this, go take a look at BANKSY – a true street artist and social activist – http://www.banksy.co.uk – No one even knows who this guy is, true artist.
