Here’s the text of the letter from Jones Elementary School to parents. Thanks to loyal reader Marla for this:

Good evening parents!

This is Marsha Lipe, proud principal of Ira B. Jones Elementary School. As many of you know, President Obama will be addressing the school-age students of the United States on Tuesday, September 8th. The contents of the speech are scheduled for release on Monday, September 7th.

Asheville City Schools Central Services will be taping the speech. As a school, we will be airing the speech on Thursday, September 10th, in the school auditorium. This allows time for all staff to preview the speech prior to the broadcast.

If you do not wish for your child to view the speech – you are asked to contact your child’s classroom teacher before September 10th. Alternate activities will be available for those not participating in the media center. Thank you and have a great weekend.

There’s helpful contact information here for local schools and school boards. And you can vote in the Ashvegas poll here.

Be afraid. A sitting president wants to address school children – our future leaders – during desperate times. He wants to try to make a positive impression. He wants to let them know the hard work they are already doing is critical to the the nation and the world. He wants to encourage them to keep up that critical effort and to keep us headed in the right direction. This speech to American kids is a controversial issue? Be very afraid.

Our president is going to tell children to stay in school, work hard, make a contribution to their communities. What is the issue with this statement??? My word, didn’t Ronald Reagan give a speech to school children about tax cuts- I remember that speech! What the hell is the problem with Obama’s speech? Grrrrrrrrr…………

After the President of the United States speaks to school children about the value of education, Republicans will make opposing comments extolling ignorance.

    Let me get this write-
If you want to bring a loaded gun and sit outside a presidential speech, that’s ok,
even after Squeaky Fromme, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinkley, Sirhan Sirhan, etc.

But if we’re going to let small children listen to the president speak after an election that all concede was won by a majority (tho some fault McCain for not challengin the validity of Obama’s citizenship),
we need to have protections in place??
