Outside magazine has named Asheville a top 10 U.S. river town, and it is asking the public to vote to pick the overall winner.
Outside is partnering with American Rivers, a top river conservation organization, on the contest. Here’s what American Rivers says about Asheville:
The French Broad River flows right through town and offers a 120-mile paddle trail with excellent smallmouth bass fishing, multiple access points for launching a boat or kayak, and endless camping opportunities. Whitewater boating on both the French Broad and the nearby Nantahala rivers are world class, too.
The other cities on the list: Hood River, Oregon; Nevada City, Calif.; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tenn.; Boise, Idaho; Missoula, Mont.; Durango, Colo.; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Richmond, Va. Richmond has a huge lead in the voting right now with more than 400 votes, to 32 for Asheville.
The town that gets the most votes will get the cover of Outside in October.
