UPDATED 7 p.m, Sunday: Brooklyn Vegan and Consequence of Sound are calling it: Morrissey has been diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer, and is canceling his Asheville show as well as other shows in his current U.S. tour including Nashville, Altanta, Lawrence KS, Clear Lake IA and Lincoln NE.

From Brooklyn Vegan quoting an unknown source, likely the Morrissey newsletter:

Following hospital treatment, Morrissey has been diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer and the upcoming engagements in Asheville, NC, Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA, Lawrence, KS, Clear Lake, IA and Lincoln, NE will need to be rescheduled. Morrissey is expected to make a full recovery and thanks everyone concerned for their support during this time. The tour will resume in Las Vegas on Saturday, February 9. Patrons are encouraged to hold on to their tickets as all rescheduled dates will be announced within the coming days.

Morrissey apologizes greatly for any and all inconvenience and looks forward to continuing his US tour.

Far as we can tell, this will make three Asheville cancellations/postponements in a row for the singer:  March 2009, December 2012 and January 2013.

Rolling Stone confirms it via Billboard: Singer Morrissey was hospitalized in Michigan last week. The former Smiths frontman is currently touring the U.S., and his next scheduled tour stop is here in Asheville at the Orange Peel on Monday, a much-anticipated show that’s been sold out for months:

According to a rep for the singer, he was admitted to the William Beaumont hospital, “where he is undergoing tests for a suspected bladder infection.”

The former Smiths frontman canceled a date in Flint, Mich., on Jan. 24 and has postponed two additional shows. Several of his recent dates, including the night in Flint, had been rescheduled from last year when Morrissey interrupted his October tour to spend time with his hospitalized mother.

Per a previous release, the current trio of dates had been canceled and postponed, respectively, thanks to a “band illness.” The tour was initially expected to resume on Monday, though it is unclear if Morrissey’s ailment will result in a further delay.

From Rolling Stone:

Morrissey canceled his January 24th show in Flint earlier this week, and postponed dates in Minneapolis and Chicago, citing a “band member illness” as the cause. He had only just begun to resume his U.S. tour, after postponing several dates in October to be with his mother, who was hospitalized in England. His next show is currently scheduled for Monday in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Monday show in Asheville is a rescheduled date from December that could now be rescheduled again or even canceled, though there is no official word yet that I can find. The show has been sold out for months, with fans driving in from all over.

Check the Orange Peel Facebook page for updates. Keep in mind the Peel can’t provide information that it doesn’t have.

Condolences (?) to all you Morrissey fans, and best wishes to Morrissey for a quick recovery.

I guess we can add Morrissey to the growing list of canceled Asheville shows (Adele, Elvis Presley …)
