Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court will be the keynote speaker at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Bar Association.

The Annual Meeting will take place Thursday through Sunday, June 20-23, in Asheville at the Grove Park Inn, which is celebrating its centennial this year.

Scalia will present the Willis Smith and Willis Smith Jr. Ethics and Professionalism address during the Friday morning General Session.

A native of Trenton, N.J., Scalia has served on the U.S. Supreme Court since Sept. 26, 1986, having previously served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He received his A.B. from Georgetown University and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School, and was a Sheldon Fellow of Harvard University from 1960-61.

Scalia practiced law in Cleveland from 1961-67. He later served as a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law (1967-71) and the University of Chicago School of Law (1977-82), and as a visiting law professor at Georgetown University and Stanford University.

The Annual Meeting will also feature installation of Alan Duncan of Greensboro as the 119th president of the NCBA. Duncan will succeed Mike Wells of Winston-Salem.

Also speaking at the Annual Meeting will be Chief Justice Sarah Parker of the N.C. Supreme Court and Jim Sandman, president and CEO of Legal Services Corp., who will be the featured speaker at Friday’s President’s Luncheon.

The General Practice Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Thursday evening. Attorneys comprising the 2013 induction class are Thomas Hansley “Tommy” Morris of Kinston, John S. “Jack” Stevens of Asheville, Allen G. Thomas of Wilson, Diane A. “Dee” Wells of Raleigh, Thomas H. “Tom” Wellman of Roanoke Rapids and Charles B. Young Sr. of Hickory.

Highlighting the Saturday morning General Session will be a panel discussion on “Big-Time University Athletics: The Changing Landscape,” moderated by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Conrad, a former Academic All-America basketball player at Clemson University.

Comprising the panel are former N.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr of Poyner Spruill; Tom Ross, president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system; Todd Turner, founder and president of Collegiate Sports Associates and former athletic director the University of Connecticut, N.C. State University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Washington; attorney Roscoe Howard of Andrews Kurth in Washington, D.C., a member the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions; and Charles Clodfelter, the Z. Smith Reynolds Professor of Public Policy Studies and Professor of Economics and Law at Duke University and the author of “Big-Time Sports in American Universities.”

Featured programs also include a joint session with the N.C. Conference of Superior Court Judges, the NCBA Paralegal Division’s 15th anniversary.
