The Local TacoReaction has been streaming in to the news Friday that The Local Taco recently bought Boca restaurant from its two co-owners on Lexington Avenue, Asheville’s most eclectic downtown street.

Some folks are hailing their arrival and what they say is delicious food. Others are down on a chain restaurant coming to an avenue full of local independent business owners.

Here’s what The Local Taco said in an Ashvegas comment, in response to the “chain” criticism:

Santa, hope you give us a chance. We hate the word “chain”…every one of our restaurants looks/feels totally different. The concept was more about each restaurant having it’s own identity, promoting local farmers/produce, displaying local art, partnering with local charities, etc. We have been wanting to be in Asheville for a long time, because we feel like people here appreciate restaurants trying to buy local. So, hopefully we won’t mislead or give the impression that we don’t really buy local…we have and it will continue to be a major part of what we do and are. Thanks!

One thing is certain: Asheville has an ongoing love affair with tacos. What’s your take?

I don’t think it’s a bad thing Local Taco is coming, what I don’t like is that BOCA is closing. Some people are seeing that a ‘Local’ restaurant is being replaced by a ‘chain’. If Local Taco was just opening a new place in a neutral location it probably wouldn’t get some of the flack it is getting, but due to the fact that BOCA is out and it’s in creates the direct image that they are ‘replacing’ a local joint.

We used to live in nashville and the food is expensive, inconstent, and not local. Good luck in asheville with the myth.

How isn’t their food local they use local produce, eggs, meat, fruit and display local art. I am a little confused by your statement and if you call $2.75 for a taco expensive than I think you need to eat from taco trucks were they get the cheapest and worst product they can get.

I have eaten at the one in Nashville and just tried the one in Greenville this afternoon which opened only three weeks ago. Great good, great service..I look forward to having them down the street from my office. 😉
